CASE STUDY FOR KAWASAKI DELEGATION

Because the Kawasaki, Japan City Government was in the process of developing a “Coastal Area Strategy.” to redevelop a 2800ha former industrial site into an area for innovation industries, visitor attractions, parks, and transportation, it retained Parter International to plan, develop, and implement an educational mission to New York City and Boston. The goal of the mission was to study successful revitalization projects and become acquainted with “best practices,” which could be applied to Kawasaki.

Parter International: maintained regular communication with the Kawasaki team to ensure that its goals were achieved and keep them up to date on the planning; conducted in-depth research; compiled a list of recommendations with respect to the cities, organizations, and individuals that could provide valuable knowledge; reached out to its personal contacts at the highest levels of the organizations to be visited; prepared bios of the delegation members, a background description of the mission, and information about Kawasaki City to assist in obtaining meetings; scheduled meetings and created an itinerary that met the delegations needs and was logistically efficient; compiled a list of questions the Delegation wanted answered and sent to the individuals hosting the delegation; prepared background information of each organization and individual hosting the delegation for the Kawasaki
Delegation prior to its arrival.

The six-person delegation was led by Mayor Fukuda and Deputy Mayor Fujikura. Alan Parter accompanied the Kawasaki Delegation throughout the entire trip, visiting twenty locations and meeting with 29 individuals. A few examples of the meetings and tours were: the CEO of Brooklyn Navy Yard; the CEO of Industry City; the Assistant General Manager of Barclays Center, the Deputy Director of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center; six department heads at Boston City Hall; a Senior VP at NYCEDC, and the President of Brooklyn Bridge Park.Upon the completion of the mission, Parter International submitted a final report providinga full record and assessment of the activities​.
